My Daddy Is Dead

Francis Johnson
1918-2006

Francis Johnson, age 88, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 26, 2006, after an extended and courageous struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

He was born on August 27, 1918 in the family home of his fathers at Franklin, Alabama and enjoyed this Alabama River community as an avid outdoorsman throughout his entire life. After graduating from the Monroe County High School, he worked on his family farm until July of 1941, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served throughout the remainder of WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the 24th Combat Mapping Squadron in the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. Upon returning, he attended Auburn University, after which he opened and operated an agricultural supply store in Monroeville, Alabama. He married Carol Brown of Repton, Alabama in 1950. In 1956, he joined Liberty National Life Insurance Company, serving for twenty-five years until his retirement in 1981.

He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Pensacola where he was active in the homebound and hospital visitation ministries.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; his four sons, Langdon of Mobile, Alabama and wife Cheri; Francis of Mobile and wife Rose; Charles of Atlanta, Georgia and wife Jana; and Dennis of Louisville, Kentucky and wife Tracy; eight grandchildren, Chad, Cliff, Will, Peter, Chris Anne, Langdon, Nathan, and Anabeth; brother Foster of Franklin, Alabama and sister Lillie VanRoy of Montgomery, Alabama.

Memorial services will be on Saturday, October 28, 10:00 a.m. in the Pleitz Chapel at the First Baptist Church of Pensacola, 500 N. Palafox Street, with the Rev. Dr. Barry Howard officiating. Graveside services will be held later that day at 3:00 p.m. in the River Ridge Cemetery of Franklin, Alabama.

Pallbearers are Glyn Brown, Rusty Corcoran, Dr. Robert Howard, Buck Laird, Ray Lynch, and Dr. Robert K. Wilson.

Memorial gifts may be sent in lieu of flowers to the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence, 10075 Hillview Road, Pensacola, Florida, 32514.

Charlie,
We love you and lift you up in our prayers each day. Please tell your sweet mother that she, also, is in our prayers. My daddy died in 1977 and I still miss him. My mother suffered from the same horrid disease as your daddy, but she is 'well' now. No matter how old you are or how many years it has been since you lost a parent, you often recall the grief.

Love you and Jana,
Mamie and Bob

With love and prayers for you and your whole family...

Am thinking of that wonderful old hymn "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder". He'll be there!

God speed,

Charlie,
Barb and I send you and your family our love and prayers. Loss of a parent leaves a real big void in our lives but what a wonderful contribution to so many was made by your daddy in the time the Lord allotted im on this earth. What a solace that must be.
We think of you and Janna often.

Mark and I will be thinking of you as you walk this path....sometimes I still can't believe that our Dad is gone....but then I think of how well he now is, living the promise of eternal life. Prayers for you and your family.

May you walk in the narrow path and be pleasing to our Lord and he will Bless you.
I know where River Ridge cemetery is located. I have distant kin in the area. Are you perhaps descended from Ida F. Johnson that married Frank Leslie Rutherford?

John,

Ida F. Johnson was the sister of my great-grandfather, Charles Langdon Johnson. Frank was her cousin, not uncommon in that day. Charles, Frank, and his brother, Andy, were legendary steamboat captains on the Alabama River.

Thanks for the comment!

Dear Charlie,

I am so sorry to read of your father's passing. I know your world here will never be the same. I still mourn the passing of my mother in August of 2001. It was a personally devastating time for me as it was very quick and unexpected. Five weeks later, our nation was rocked with the shock of our age on 9/11. Shortly after, you and Jana left Lubbock as our pastor at Second Baptist. In many ways, emotionally, spiritually, and professionally, I have not recovered. Even though I have seen the two of you a few times since then, I have not been able to share this with you. This seemed an appropriate opportunity, if for no other purpose but to share in the loss of your daddy. I pray God's grace will help to fill the hole the size of your dad that no doubt continues to hurt. God bless you and Jana as you continue to serve Him where ever you may be.

In Christian love,
DeeDee
